“Have you heard where she is?” I ask my brother.

“Only that she escaped the building where we were holding her. We should scope out the city streets. She couldn’t have gone far.”

I nod and fly as fast as I can, my brother trailing right behind me. I’ve always been a faster flyer than him, though not by much.

As we come to the end of the main street sudden cold chills race through my limbs and my stomach clenches tight. Fear? Looking around there’s no obvious threat. Then I realize, it’s not my fear. It isn’t the fear of being unable to find Abby, it’s a deeper fear, as though I fear for my life.

It’s Abby’s.

I’ve heard this happens to some Ahren men and women, when their mate is in danger, they feel it. Strong emotions their mate feels, they feel too. It usually only happens when an Ahren has been mated for many years and they have a deep, developed, strong connection. I’ve barely known Abby so how can this be?

And yet, I’m positive it’s her emotions. She must be in mortal peril, fear this extravagant could only mean that.

“Something is horribly wrong. We have to find her!” I yell.

Glancing over my shoulder to make sure he heard me, weirdly, he’s already looks fearful before I finish my sentence.

I don’t know how, but as we fly toward the outer edge of the city, I know we’re getting closer to Abby. The fear is more pronounced, as if I hear her screams in my head.

Wait, no, that isn’t in my head. That’s Abby!

“We found her!” Lukien yells, pointing ahead.

Following his arm I spot her. Two of the Spiroli have her cornered. Her screams cut through the air and assault my ears. Rage flames to life, my head spins, my heart pumps faster and I draw my sword.

I can’t… give… in.

“We have to fight as one,” Lukien says.

Clenching my teeth, I push the anger into its box then nod to my brother, cold calculation taking over.

“Do you think we still can?”

“We have to.”

It’s difficult for two Ahren men to fight as one entity. It takes an incredibly strong connection to anticipate each other’s moves and fight back to back in order to destroy an enemy.

Lukien and I used to do it before he fell and became Bak’ahren.

We angle down to the creatures, swords drawn and alight with fire. Their attention is focused on Abby, giving us an advantage. I bank to the side and run my sword across their back.

It’s not a deep cut but it serves to distract their attention. The creatures let out demonic howls as they whirl around. Lukien and I put our backs toward one another and hover at their level.

They rear back, hissing and spitting venom, closing with us. Pulling them away from Abby.

The monsters move fast, clattering as they scurry towards us, pincer like claws clacking. I know those claws are as sharp as any sword and backed with strength enough to decapitate an Ahren who gets too close.
